About the Show:
Recording his debut album Trouble Follows Me felt like raising a first child for Willie Williams — a process that demanded patience, honesty, and no compromises. Raised on country music but deeply influenced by soul, rock, blues, and jazz, Willie drew inspiration from icons like Bill Withers, Merle Haggard, Jerry Garcia, and Delbert McClinton to craft a record that truly reflects his diverse musical roots.
After years devoted to family life, Willie finally stepped into the studio determined to make an album rooted in truth, not trends. Co-produced with Stewart Myers (Jason Mraz, Agents Of Good Roots), the record was tracked in Nashville and Richmond, and features an all-star lineup: Bob Britt on electric guitars, Lynn Williams on drums, Steve Bassett and Kevin McKendree on keys, Steve Hinson on pedal steel, plus horns, fiddle, and a chorus of background vocalists. Notably, Lee Roy Parnell adds his signature slide guitar to “Halfway To Hell.”
The album’s tracks reveal Willie’s broad influences and sharp songwriting: the sassy “Too Close,” soulful “Before It Gets Better,” easy-swinging “It’s Alright By Me,” and tender ballad “Everyday,” which Willie calls a love letter to his wife. The haunting title track, written by David Mowry, moved Willie so deeply he named the album after it.
Willie’s journey from South Carolina and Virginia to the stage included years in the corporate world, which he left in his 40s to pursue music full time. Along the way, he played countless gigs —both solo and with artists like Lee Roy Parnell and Great Southern —honing his craft as a performer and songwriter.
Now, with Trouble Follows Me, Willie offers an unvarnished portrait of who he is: a storyteller unafraid to tackle love, addiction, and injustice, always aiming for honesty over polish. “Aside from my family,” Willie says, “finishing this album is my proudest accomplishment so far in life.”
