Explore Chemnitz – European Capital of Culture 2025 with VeloNotte sunset tour🎉
This year, Chemnitz—located just a short distance from Dresden and Leipzig—is proudly holding the title of European Capital of Culture. Known as Karl-Marx-Stadt during the GDR era, it was once the most densely populated, wealthy, and ambitious region in East Germany. Many of us remember the name from childhood, even if we didn’t fully understand the city’s importance.
Since the 19th century Chemnitz had the nickname “Saxon Manchester” thanks to its booming textile industry. During the GDR period, it became famous for iconic brands like Diamant, Barkas, Robotron, and the legendary figure skater Katarina Witt. On the city’s outskirts was the secret Soviet-German uranium company Wismut’s headquarters—an intriguing chapter in its complex history.
Join us for a unique artistic and research project curated by researchers Sergey Nikitin-Rimsky & Martin Düspohl, in collaboration with local activists from the Saxon Vehicles Museum. Dive deep into Chemnitz’s rich cultural layers—from official state culture to underground movements—and discover the evolution of its architecture. Experience the city’s first-ever Palace of Culture, the stunning central ensemble that remains beloved and protected, the StadtHalle by architect Rudolf Wizer, and the striking neo-futuristic monument to Karl Marx by Lev Kerbel.
Luckily, we will wrap up our promenade with a picnic with live music in the Huge garage cooperative, part of the #3000garagen art festival.
