Miss Brodie is a formidable figure who moulds young minds to her form. And what is more, she is so intensely interesting, that the girls admire her above all else. But Miss Brodie is not honest. She prevaricates, and then tells the girls to do as she tells them, not as she does herself. She is having an affair with the Music Teacher, and has had one with the Art Teacher.
Jean Brodie has her favourites - her ‘Brodie Set’ - the beautiful Jenny, the timid Mary, the dramatic Monica, and the sharp-witted and ever-watchful Sandy. At the Marcia Blaine School for Girls, in the conservative and respectable Edinburgh of the 1930s, we follow the girls’ journey under the influence of the charismatic Miss Brodie, from their adoration to their disillusionment.
The BBC published a list of the top 100 Most Inspiring Novels in 2019, and the 1961 novel of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark is included in this list. The 1966 stage adaptation by Jay Presson Allen starred Vanessa Redgrave as Jean Brodie. The late Dame Maggie Smith won Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Jean Brodie in the 1969 Film. Geraldine McEwan played Jean Brodie to great acclaim in the 1978 TV Series - episodes of which can now be watched via YouTube.
