The public is invited to the Mary Martin Gallery on August 1, 2025, for the opening of “Beauty is in the Iris” by Asya Baldwin, which will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 143 East Bay Street.
The ancient Greek Goddess, Iris, a symbol for faith, wisdom, and courage, inspires “Beauty is in the Iris.” Through the use of color, Baldwin expresses emotions and self-expression, and captures the viewer’s eyes, invoking the rainbow goddess.
Asya Baldwin was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1976 and earned a degree in fine art from the College of National Art in St. Petersburg. In the art exhibition, “Beauty is in the Iris”, Baldwin brings vibrant Iris flowers to life on canvas. Trained in porcelain painting and influenced by classical realism. Her work blends emotion, light, and color to offer moments of joy and reflection.
In the signature piece, “Glimmering Dream”, a 48” x 36” oil on canvas, the use of an Iris for the focus on the painting centers the viewer, offering a space for pure appreciation of the simple pleasures of life. The texture of oil is used to reflect the surface of an iris found in nature, and the vivid blues, pinks, and yellows reinforce the emotions and moods she chooses to portray. Although Baldwin is trained in pastels, watercolor, and other mediums, her use of oil on canvas emphasizes her intention of capturing beauty in a romantic way, as seen in “Glimmering Dream”. Additionally, classical art and the technique of old masters influence her own journey. Learning and improving from traditional skills, Asya Baldwin is able to capture the delightful fragrance of a flower on a spring day.
“My hope is to offer you a captivating array of experiences, in various sizes, that will uplift your spirit and warm your heart. Let’s celebrate the beauty together!” expresses Asya Baldwin.
