Working therapeutically with couples

This course is for qualified counselors/therapists with a minimum of 2 years post qualifying experience. It is recommended for professionals who would like to develop their knowledge and skills in working therapeutically with couples, and build their confidence in this area.

Course Overview;

• Feel confident working with couples
• What are the challenges and difficulties when working with couples?
• How to manage the space between the couple
• How to manage the conversation - not allowing a party to dominate
• How to working with the fluid dynamics of a relationship
• Impartiality and professional boundaries – remaining empathic for both parties
• How to avoid being manipulated by either party, and how to avoid collusion
• Increasing your self-awareness and reflective practice
• How to recognise their own opinions within the counselling space
• How to manage your personal triggers
• What happens after the session – contracting
• Setting Tasks and homework
• Couple vs Individual work - How to assess when each is needed and when to bring together.

Cath and Jo

Trainers, Consultants and External Supervisors.

Jo and Cath have over 25 years expereince working therapeutically with Children, Young People, Adults and Couples. They both have extensive knowledge, skills and experience in working with survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence, perpetrators of abuse, functionla family therapy, life story narrative work, EMDR, Child Exploitation, Complex Mental Health Issues, Disordered Eating, Non Suiciade Self Injury and Attachment Disorders.

They are highly skilled trainers and facilitators, and deliver training programmes across the South West, including but not limited to Counsellors, Support Staff, Cornwall Council Staff Teachers, Specailist Addiction Workers, Social Workers, The NHS and workers within justice and crime prevention, and countless other frontline professionals.
