Iain’s strong interest in ‘improving the breed’ of Australian wine has seen him in many judging and chair roles. Highlights include Chairman of the Hunter Valley Wine Show and Chairman with the Sydney Royal Wine Show, an inaugural board member of the Winemakers Federation of Australia, Vice President of the Australian Winemakers Forum, Chair of the Technical Sub-committee, and a tutor for the prestigious annual Len Evans Tutorial. In 2016, the Australian Women in Wine Awards recognised Iain as the workplace champion of change.
As Chief Winemaker, Iain was the driving force behind Brokenwood's flagship wine, the Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz and its promotion as a unique single vineyard shiraz. Rated as exceptional in the Langton's classification of Australian wine, it remains the only Hunter Valley shiraz to feature.
in 2018, Iain was named as a Member of the Order of Australia for his significant service to oenology as a winemaker, and he was inducted as a Hunter Valley Living Legend in 2021.
Never one to remain idle, Iain and Hunter vigneron Peter Wiggs have recently joined forces to launch a bespoke wine label, Riggs and Wiggs crafting a range of wines from historic vineyard sites, blending tradition with innovation by using the 130-year-old open fermenters from the original Cote d’or Winery.
No stranger to Bleasdale and to Langhorne Creek, Riggs began his career as Bleasdale’s winemaker back in 1973. In November 2024, Iain returned, half a century later as the Chairman of the Board. With its rich and colourful history, Bleasdale Wines stands as one of the oldest wineries in Australia with175 years of continuous winemaking.
This event will be at the recently opened Iron Gate Kitchen, Chefs Lara Hagan and Joey Ingram will be serving up at scrumptious meal to match the outstanding wine selection from Iain.
