On this year’s Summer Solstice, Cedar Falls becomes the first city in Iowa to officially celebrate Make Music Day, a worldwide festival of music open to all.
The free, all day, music fun, features live performances at multiple locations, from downtown streets to local parks (listed below). Highlights include diverse local musicians, a collaborative community song project, and invitations to bring an instrument and join the fun. Don’t miss this day of music, creativity, and community.
Live music is hosted at River Place Plaza, Ragged Edge Art Bar, Bar Winslow, Cedar Falls Farmer’s Market, College Hill’s Pettersen Plaza, West Music, and the Hearst Center for the Arts; with performances and join-in jam sessions – all free for everyone.

This celebration is part of a worldwide day of music. Unlike a typical music festival, Make Music Day invites anyone and everyone to join and play music or host performances. This holiday has spread throughout the world and is now celebrated in more than 2,000 cities across dozens of countries.
Using funds from the Cedar Falls Public Library Endowment in the Cedar Falls Community Foundation, CFPL has added a sensory music garden on the east side of the building, facing State Street. This outdoor space invites visitors of all ages to explore a magical world of sound through musical instruments shaped like a sunflower, mushrooms, cattails, and bell-shaped flowers. In addition, visitors will find a xylophone complete with sheet music for some of your favorite tunes and a cyclone that will bring the sound of rolling thunder rain or shine. Library staff would like to thank the city’s Public Works Department for installing the instruments, which are ready for you to play! Music is ready to be made.
