Clare L Martin Biographical Statement
Clare L. Martin is a poet and teaching artist based in Louisiana. Her book-length poem, *Crone*, was published by Nixes Mate Review Books in 2018. Clare's second collection, *Seek the Holy Dark*, was selected as the 2017 entry in the Louisiana Cajun and Creole Series by Yellow Flag Press. Her debut collection, *Eating the Heart First*, was released by Press 53.
Clare’s poetry has been featured in various literary publications, including *Thrush Poetry Journal*, *Poets and Artists*, and *Louisiana Literature*. In 2019, she performed *Crone* as a dramatic reading on stage at the Teche Center for the Arts in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, and at The Latter Library in New Orleans, collaborating with her creative partner, Bessie Senette.
Throughout her career, Martin has appeared at numerous venues, such as the George Washington University Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., the Asheville Poetry Festival in North Carolina, the Austin International Poetry Festival in Texas, and in Seattle during the Association of Writers and Writing Programs Conference.
Regionally in Louisiana, she has performed in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Grand Coteau, Arnaudville, Breaux Bridge, Lake Charles, and New Orleans. Additionally, she was a featured panelist at the Louisiana Book Festival, invited by former Poet Laureates of Louisiana, John Warner Smith and Jack Bedell, at the Louisiana State Library in Baton Rouge.
Clare maintains a robust network with international poets and writers, frequently collaborating with artists from various disciplines. She also serves as a private creative mentor and leader for emerging writers, facilitating projects such as Acadiana Scribes, Acadiana Word Lab, and Renegade Writers.
With over 20 years of experience as a professional writer and teaching artist, she has conducted numerous creative writing workshops for both school-aged children and adults.
In 2015, she founded MockingHeart Review, an online poetry and visual art magazine, which is now in its tenth year under the editorship of poet and professor Dr. Tyler Robert Sheldon.
Clare L. Martin also serves as the executive director of the Vermilion Council on Aging, Inc.
