Catskill Color Workshop
Join local artist Lou Thorne for a free, all-ages workshop exploring the colors of Catskill. After an introduction to wild pigment work, we will start the day by looking for sources of color in the streets of the village, foraging materials like plants, brick fragments, and rust. We'll spend the rest of the day learning to process these materials into inks and paints, and making art together with our new colors. There will also be other pigment materials and homemade inks and paints on hand to play with.
Schedule
Feel free to join for the whole day, or just one part.
10am-12pm: Foraging—We'll explore Catskill and look for wild pigment sources.
12pm-1pm: Lunch Break
1pm-3pm: Processing and Painting—We'll work with our found materials (and other provided materials) to create inks and paints, and make art with our new colors.
Registration
This workshop is free, but you must register here on Eventbrite to receive the door code for Square One Painting and Drawing School.
About the Project
This workshop is part of the Catskill Abundance Palette Project. Lou is creating a palette of colors made from Catskill's "abundance stream": materials that are so abundant that we seek to manage the excess, such as waste, invasive species and weeds, and industrial remnants. Inks and paints from the Abundance Palette will be available at the workshop for participants to explore and paint with.
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CREATE Council on the Arts.
Info: We will meet at Square One for an introduction to the project, wild pigment work, and foraging guidelines. Then we will set out to search the immediate area for pigment material. Participants will be welcome to move as a group and receive guidance or break off and explore on their own. We will return to Square One by 11:45am to deposit materials and prepare for processing.
Info: We'll take an hour to rest and eat. Food is available to purchase from Willa's cafe on the first floor of the building, or from other places in Catskill, or participants can bring their own lunch. Square One will remain open to those who wish to stick around and begin processing their pigment materials, or paint with supplied materials.
Info: We'll learn some basic guidelines for processing natural materials, with demonstrations. We'll discuss inks, paints, and other pigment vehicles, and explore how to turn our found materials into art supplies. Participants will have time to process their found materials, or work with supplied materials. There will also be a selection of inks and paints from the Catskill Abundance Palette available to play with, and we'll create a group painting.
