EXHIBITION LAUNCH: SCIENCE FICTION BARBARIANS IN LOVE

You’re invited to The Albion Castlemaine for the launch of ‘Science Fiction Barbarians in Love: A Toy Photography Exhibition by Adam Ford’.

Toy photography is a well-established photographic practice that is strongly represented online, particularly on social media.

Adam Ford’s toy photos subvert the gendered narratives of heteronormativity and violence that permeated the toys he was given as a child. Many people who collect and take photos of action figures create battle scenes full of punches and kicks and guns and knives. Adam pushes back against this by having his figures play, dance, hold hands, have tea parties and walk together in nature. They are gentle and nice to each other, avoiding any conflict. As Adam likes to say, “They’re not fighting any more.”

Adam lives and writes on unceded Jaara land in so-called Chewton. He is the author of the poetry collections The Third Fruit is a Bird and Not Quite the Man for the Job, the short story collection Heroes and Civilians, the online spoken word walking tour Dance to the Anticlinal Fold and the microfiction photoromance zine Science Fiction Barbarians in Love.
