This free training session is open to those interested in becoming a Riverfly volunteer, as part of the Riverfly Monitoring Initiative (RMI).
RMI is a monthly survey of the invertebrates that live in the river.
Groups of two or more people conduct a kick sample of the river bed at set locations along the river, and identify 8 insect groups.
The findings are entered into a national database and the information helps us build a picture of river health, and can identify pollution incidents and long-term changes.
Becoming an RMI volunteer involves a monthly commitment to carry out monitoring at your site, monitoring is usually conducted within the same Thurs-Mon period every month for 2-3 hours.
The training session is a free full day event, with a classroom based element in the morning followed by a river sampling session in the afternoon.
Following the training session, we are hoping to recruit volunteers to take on the monthly monitoring of the River Wandle at Hackbridge, near to Riverside Gardens.
What to bring: Please bring a packed lunch and bottle of water. Training materials are provided but you may want to bring a pen and paper.
We will provide tea, coffee, biscuits and all the equipment needed.
