Peter writes:
Anne Boleyn is a relatively new play, and was commissioned by The Globe Theatre, premiering there in 2010 with the title role being played by Miranda Raison.
While Anne Boleyn has often been portrayed as being manipulated into Henry’s affections by ambitious parents or as a wild schemer who cunningly navigates her way through Tudor politics, Brenton’s play portrays her as a religious reformer who furthers the Protestant cause in her enthusiasm for the Tyndale Bible. The play switches between two settings, Anne’s life in Tudor England and the court of King James I, 70 years later when Anne’s bible is discovered in a chest.
All the usual characters are here in this racy play, Henry, of course, along with
Thomas Cromwell, Cardinal Wolsey and Anne’s ladies in waiting.
