Book launch - Louise Ruane

We’re delighted to be launching ‘No Place for a Girl like me’ - pop along for a wee glass of bubbly, some craic and a reading

Louise developed a passion for writing after attending The John Hewitt Summer School in Armagh shortly after returning to Northern Ireland after teaching in Spain. It was during her time abroad that she realised the profound impact of her upbringing in Belfast during the 60s as the only girl in a family of eight where maleness was regarded as superior, and the devastating effect The Troubles had on her teenage dreams.

Drawing from these experiences, Louise channelled her emotions and reflections into her writing. Over the years, she has successfully published several memoir pieces in prominent publications such as The Guardian and local cultural magazines. Her writing has been characterised as a blend of humour and introspection.

Louise's teaching career spanned many years in West Belfast, followed by several stints in secondary schools in Andalucia and Cantabria. More recently she has worked with community groups on either side of the Belfast peace walls, and as a first responder in a suicide prevention charity. She believes these diverse experiences and locales enriched her perspective on her earlier life.

Louise has received funding through the Northern Ireland Arts Council to write a sequel to No Place for a Girl Like Me. She now lives in North Down with her husband, near to their three children and six granddaughters.
