Edward (Teddy) Forster was born on 8th June 2022 to Sinead and Alex Forster. At the age of 5 weeks he was diagnosed with Left Ventricle Non-Compaction Dilated Cardiomyopathy and only 3 weeks later went into sudden Heart Failure.
Teddy was put onto an ECMO machine at Perth Children’s Hospital and 4 days later, 18th August 2022, was transferred to Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Melbourne, where their journey with HeartKids began.
18 months later, after a rollercoaster journey on a Ventricular Assist Device while waiting for a Heart Transplant at RCH, Teddy sadly lost his battle and passed away, 25th of February 2024.
HeartKids were there every step of the way. Helping the family create special memories with weekly heart family morning teas, celebrating Teddy’s birthday and other milestones within the hospital, and documenting Teddy’s journey through the Heart Bead program. Sinead and Alex were given invaluable financial support with food vouchers and accommodation assistance. HeartKids were also there during the tough days with emotional support, a friendly chat, a shoulder to cry on, and importantly for Sinead and Alex the support and assistance in organising Teddy’s memorial service at RCH.
HeartKids were able to support Sinead and Alex in creating a loving, positive experience for Teddy while he lived within the walls of the hospital.
HeartKids support did not end there, with ongoing emotional support while Sinead and Alex transition back to ‘normal’ life and continue through their healing journey following the loss of Teddy.
This year, 2025 we are opening the challenge up to other riders to join Teddy's Grandfather, Michael in attempting to conquer Mt Everest with an Everesting Challenge, raising money for HeartKids in Teddy's name.
This involves riding a bike up and down a hill until completing the same amount of elevation as you would do getting to the top of Mt Everest. “Fiendishly simple, yet brutally hard. Everesting is the most difficult climbing challenge in the world.”
On 17th August 2025, a number of riders will attempt to complete the challange as a solo, duo or in a team of four; riding up a hill (TBC) a number of times to reach an elevation of 8848m. A feat we have dubbed the Tour de Teddy!!
Base camp will be set up at the bottom of the hill from when the first rider commences, feel free to bring food and drinks, and come support this challenge and celebrate the joy that the memory of Teddy brings us all. We encourage everyone to come down and be a part of the day.
All money raised with this challenge will go to HeartKids to support the amazing work that they do.
