Would you like to learn how to sew your own clothes and accessories? This is the course for you!
Over five weeks, you'll learn the tools and materials you'll need, how to set up a sewing machine, and how to follow a simple sewing pattern. You'll make your own cushion cover, a tote bag, a zip pouch, and a pair of PJ shorts, and leave with a bunch of new skills to make many more things at home. Sewing machines, notions, and all tools will be provided, as well as fabric for the first three projects.
Course outline:
Week 1: Make friends with a sewing machine and learn how to wind a bobbin and thread it properly. Then make a simple cushion cover with an envelope back opening and snap fasteners. You'll be covering your sofa with new cushions in no time.
Week 2: Make a roomy tote bag with just the right length handles for toting your essentials – such as your hat and water bottle – everywhere you go. You'll learn how to sew French seams and make boxed corners, as well as how to secure straps. Everyone will be getting one for Christmas!
Week 3: Make a handy zip pouch that’s fully lined for a neat finish. Learn how to insert a zip and add a lining. You'll be super impressed with yourself after this class and will no doubt make many more zip pouches for yourself, your family, and your friends.
Weeks 4 and 5: Make a pair of PJ shorts with an elastic waistband and optional buttonholes for a drawstring. You'll learn how to take body measurements and select the right pattern size, how to cut pattern pieces on the grainline, how to use interfacing, how to sew buttonholes, and how to insert elastic into a channel. And you'll get to go home with a pair of PJ shorts perfect for hot summer nights.
All projects come with printed instructions and paper patterns you can take home to make many more items at home.
We're looking forward to starting you on your sewing journey!
