Join us once again as we adventure out on one of our beloved heritage trails in Western Australia, the 31 kilometre KattaMorda Heritage Trail. This time, we will take our time and enjoy the hike over several weeks, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty of the surroundings.
We will meet at Bean 2 Brook, Pickering Brook Road, Pickering Brook WA, and hike toward the link and back.
Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual nature enthusiast, the KattaMorda Heritage Trail Adventure offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the landscapes and cultural heritage of the area.
Optional Lunch: After our hike, join us for lunch at Bean 2 Brook. Please bring your own money for the meal, as lunch is not included in the event.
A little history to whet your appetite: Originally known as the "Kattamorda" Heritage Trail until it was renamed to the "Kattamordo" Heritage Trail by 1998, this trail is a treasure trove of natural beauty and cultural significance.
The Noongar people, who have lived on this land for millennia, bestow names upon places and natural features that reflect their physical attributes or the actions associated with them. Katta means Hill/Head, and Moorda (or Morda) refers to the now extinct broad-faced potoroo (Potorous platyops). Thus, KattaMorda translates to Broad-faced Potoroo Hill, a poignant reminder of the region's rich heritage. There is so much for us to appreciate along this trail.
The First Nation people (traditional custodians of the land) from this region, used a section of this trail as a major route when they moved away from the coast in winter, to the drier open forest and grassland of the east, where food was more plentiful and game could easily be hunted.
Also the trail features sites of significance in the history of the timber, forestry, horticultural and tourist industries, the Goldfields Water Scheme and natural history.
