On Sunday, December 14, the Sanctuary choir of the First United Methodist Church of Carbondale, accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra, will continue their tradition of presenting worship services of lessons and carols at 8:15am and 10:45am. The orchestra is made up of outstanding instrumentalists from the region including faculty and students from SIUC and SEMO.
Our Service of Lessons and Carols is unique.
You won’t find a duplicate of this worship service anywhere! Instead of using a cantata written by a single composer, we prefer to craft our own service of varied composers and styles. Highlights include:
1. One of the most beloved arrangements of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” by David Willcocks. From the stunning brass fanfare intro to the finely crafted harmonies (Google “the Willcocks chord”), this congregational carol will instantly set the mood for this service.
2. Paul McRoy’s beautifully written and insightful introductions to the scripture readings.
3. Styles ranging from a favorite contemporary carol – “Mary, Did You Know?” – to a time-tested classical icon of the choral repertoire – Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.”
4. An international twist on a cherished seasonal favorite – “African Holy Night.”
5. Bob’s favorite Alfred Burt carol – “Some Children See Him.” (An especially meaningful message in today’s polarized world.)
6. A new John Rutter carol – “I Too Shall Walk to Bethlehem.”
7. A rhythmic setting of Isaiah 9 by Pepper Choplin – “The People Who Walk in Darkness.”
8. A beautiful instrumental mix of old and new – “All is Well with Silent Night.”
9. An opportunity to bring friends, neighbors and co-workers to a service they won’t forget.
