Africa’s Islamic Heritage and Scholarship in Focus at Global Conference in Cape Town, marking 1,500 Years Since Birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
CAPE TOWN – 12–14 September 2025 – Cape Town will host the 4th Organisation of Islamic Cooperation–IRCICA–Awqaf SA International Conference at Kirstenbosch Gardens Conference Centre, bringing together leading scholars, historians, and cultural figures from across Africa and the Muslim world.
This year’s gathering coincides with the year 1447 in the Islamic calendar, marking 1,500 years since the blessed birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — a profound milestone that honours his timeless mission of mercy, environmental stewardship, and social justice.
The conference themed the Representation of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Islamic Scholarship and Literature in Africa, will highlight Africa’s rich contributions to Sirah (Prophetic biography) scholarship, spanning historical manuscripts, poetry, and oral traditions, as well as contemporary interpretations and intercultural engagement.
Jointly organised by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), and the National Awqaf Foundation of South Africa (Awqaf SA), the three-day event aims to:
• Explore African contributions to Sirah scholarship.
• Analyse historical, literary, theological, and cultural representations of the Prophet’s life and legacy.
• Examine how these traditions have shaped African Muslim identity, education, political thought, and intercultural engagement.
• Foster scholarly collaboration through the launch of the African Sirah Research Network and a peer-reviewed conference volume.
Key Themes:
• Historical portrayals of the Prophet in African Islamic historiography
• Cultural expressions in poetry, Ajami texts, music, and oral traditions
