Difficulty:
The Melanesia to The Gables walk is a section of the Great Ocean Walk, known for its rugged coastal scenery and challenging terrain. It is part of the longer multi-day Great Ocean Walk. Considered a hard walk due to its ups and downs and potential for slippery conditions, after rain. Involves significant elevation changes, with an elevation gain of 2,454 ft and a loss of 2,585 ft.
Meeting point:
The end of the Melanesia Track (at the locked Parks Vic gate site). Google Maps pin drop will be shared.
Highlights:
Offers stunning coastal scenery, including cliffs, beaches, and the dramatic Gables Lookout, plus fern-lined creek crossings and wild flowers (paper daisies were in full bloom when we last did this one).
Additional info:
Make sure you wear suitable shoes for longer distance hikes on varying terrain with plenty of hill climbs, a good waterproof jacket and bring plenty of water. Also, note the travel distance for those coming from Geelong, the Bellarine, Torquay and/or Melbourne. We will also require two or more people to volunteer to help with the end-point car drop pff, because this hike is a point-to-point.
As always, we'll be setting a slow and steady pace, with plenty of time to stop and enjoy nature 💚
