Character Breakdown:
Beulah Culpepper: Early sixties and town curmudgeon. She was married once but that failed due to her drinking and mean-spirited comments. She has an adult daughter named Florence who moved to NYC and does not visit. With all her faults, she has great need of love and is endearing.
Willie Mae Dean: Late fifties. Free-spirited and the polar opposite of Beulah in terms of her temperament. She tends to be a bit flakey mainly because she smoked too much pot in college, but she has a sweet innocence about her. She has a husband, Bo (who is referred to but not a character), and two grown twin sons, Garth and Brooks. She teaches guitar classes at the local middle school and is nearing retirement. She has the sweet spirit of a hippie.
Virginia Bell: Early sixties. She is extremely refined, determined, and has a bit of a saucy attitude at times. She has a little boutique in downtown Savannah. Her husband, David, is about twenty years younger than her and does not mind flirting with other women.
Ruby Vaughn: Late fifties. Her daughter is Grace (the protagonist). Ruby is hard-working and has a warm demeanor because she tends to really need and value the good moments in life. She loves being around her friends. She has a diner, Ruby’s, in Savannah. She and that diner are the glue that tie the group together. Ruby’s husband, Dale, was a police officer injured in a routine traffic stop and has barely been able to move without her help since. She is motherly and tries not to show how tired she is in managing the diner and Dale’s health.
Grace Vaughn: Early forties. She is striking, self-possessed, smart, and kind. Daughter of Ruby and Dale. She is a successful doctor who lives alone in a condo in downtown Atlanta and has just recently divorced her adulterous husband, Nick.
Dale Vaughn: Mid-fifties. Husband of Ruby. Father of Grace. He used to be a policeman but was hurt on the job when his hip was shattered by a gunman at a traffic stop. He is a proud man but also kind and loving.
Nick Stone: Early forties. Controlling and adulterous ex-husband of Grace.
Brooks Dean: Late thirties. Fraternal twin of Garth. Son of Willie Mae and Bo. He has a small law office in downtown Savannah. He will be the eventual love interest of Grace when they recognize one another from high school.
David Bell: Early forties. Handsome and flirtatious. Husband of Virginia.
Bobby Grayson: Early sixties. Regular at Ruby’s diner. Widower but a true romantic. He is picked on by Beulah but will win her heart in the end.
Florence Culpepper: Late thirties. Daughter of Beulah. Accomplished and confident chef living with her girlfriend in New York City. After once being rejected by her mother for being gay, she will eventually reconcile and find the acceptance she had hoped for.
