Calling the artists, bakers, gardeners, crafters, herbalists, homesteaders, woodworkers, DIYers, hunters, and/or gatherers. On Sunday, October 12th, you are invited to the 15th annual Swap it! Community Trading Event at littleGrasse Foodworks, a community farm in Canton. The farm designed this joyful gathering for people in northern New York (and beyond!) to collectively share their skills, passions, and surplus with others. The only requirement is to bring items (as few or many as you like) that you made or grew and choose to trade with of the fellow participants.
This event has grown over the years, 2024 included 30 households with 80+ people!
DONATIONS ENCOURAGED to support future programming, but there is no entry fee for this event. The swap will be held in our barn aka "foodshed" built in 2022 at 309 Miner Street Road, Canton.
All are welcome to participate in this one-of-a-kind event. Examples of items that past attendees have brought to trade: food and garden products such as baked, canned, fermented, frozen items, fiber, ceramics, woodworking, painting, art, herbal medicine, plant cuttings, root stock, plants, seeds, and much more.
Here’s an idea of what to expect when attending the swap.
-EVERYONE IS ASKED TO ARRIVE FROM 12:45pm-1:15pm.
-All ages are welcome to participate.
-This is an active event, with limited space, as such it's not for bystanders, or households that aren't bringing items to barter.
-Follow signs for off street parking, no parking on Miner Street Rd.
-Bring only items that you grew or made.
-Label all food products, with item name and date made.
-There are no sales or money exchange allowed, just voluntary trading of your goods with others who have items that you like.
-Each household brings as few or as many items as they choose and sets them on up the tables provided.
-From 1:00-1:30pm, is people arriving, setting up, mingling and seeing what others brought.
- A welcome and ground rules are shared at 1:30pm with trading to follow.
-It’s a festive time where participants meet others and learn more about what they brought or how it’s made.
-The hosts request that participants leave their pets at home for this event.
The event hosts are Flip Filippi and Bob Washo, co-operators of littleGrasse Community Farm. The farm raises vegetables, herbs and flowers for their Greens and Beyond shareholders and enjoy hosting events to connect the community around agriculture, rural living and self-sufficiency.
