Dig into the wonders beneath our feet in this hands-on garden workshop for kids ages 4–10! In Soil Explorers, young scientists will discover what makes soil so important for plants, trees, and our planet. We’ll start with storytime, then head outside for soil investigations—feeling textures, spotting critters, and comparing colors. Kids will conduct simple experiments to learn how soil holds water and supports life. During our craft time, we’ll make “soil layers in a jar” and create earth-inspired art. To wrap up, we’ll gather in a sharing circle to reflect on what we observed, learned, and loved. This fun and educational class is designed to inspire curiosity about the natural world, build sensory skills, and get kids comfortable getting their hands dirty (in the best way!). Come explore the science and magic of soil with us! (Tickets purchased are for each child, parents/guardians in attendance get free admission.)
Info: ( 12:00 - 12:10pm) The event will start off with a warm welcome and storytime! The book we will be reading is: Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt by Kate Messner. Explore the secret realm beneath the dirt that brings the world of nature to life: Follow a young girl and her grandmother on a journey through the year planning, planting, and harvesting their garden—and learn about what's happening in the dirt to help make it all happen.
Info: (12:10pm - 12:25pm) We will have stations set up with soil trays to: -Touch and Talk- Kids will be able to feel the different kinds of soil (sand, clay, loam) in the trays. -Smell the Soil- Let the kids notice the different earthy smells. -Magnifying Glass Action- We'll look at bits of roots, leaves, bugs, and decomposing materials in the soil samples.
Info: (12:25pm - 12:40pm) We will take a short guided walk around the gardens with trowels or spoons. We will find "alive soil" under a tree or in a garden bed. We will dig gently to look for worms, roots, fungi, or beetles!
Info: (12:40pm - 12:50pm) Each child gets to make a soil layer jar using clear plastic cups: 1. Gravel or small rocks 2. Sand 3. Soil 4. Leaves/twigs 5. Water (optional)
Info: (12:50pm-1:00pm) Time to wrap up with a sharing circle! We'll share what we got to see, touch, and smell throughout our time in the gardens. What was your favorite? Once sharing time is over each child will be presented with a "Soil Superhero" badge to show off!
