Exhibition - Threads of Connection: Mohawk Art & the Environment

Join TAUNY on Saturday, October 18th from 11 a.m - 1 p.m. for an opening reception of Threads of Connection: Mohawk Art & the Environment, including with a meet & greet with the artists. Refreshments will be served. Free.

Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) and the Akwesasne Cultural Center seek to build upon their existing partnership by jointly designing and implementing an exhibition that will be displayed at each of their respective institutions. This project focuses on the impact of the environment on artisan-based practices of the Akwesasne Mohawk people through several forms: basketmaking, ceramics, and fiber arts (including weaving and beaded regalia). The exhibit features the work of ten artists which reflect the deep interrelationship between the Akwesasne and the natural world, in the context of environmental challenges the community has faced. Accompanying histories and stories highlight the cultural significance of these artistic traditions, the environmental threats posed, and the ongoing resilience and celebration expressed by these artists and the wider Akwesasne community.
