About the event

The Crab and Winkle Way – Canterbury to Whitstable – 7.5 miles / 12km
Crab and Winkle Way - Group Guided Walk

Overview:
The Crab and Winkle Way is a route steeped in history and natural beauty. Connecting the historic city of Canterbury with the coastal town of Whitstable, this moderately easy trail offers a blend of woodlands, open countryside, and seaside views. The path follows the course of one of England’s pioneering railways, providing a unique glimpse into the region’s past.

Route Details:
Starting at Canterbury West Station, the trail leads us through the city’s historic heart, passing landmarks such as Canterbury Cathedral and the medieval city walls. Exiting the city, we’ll ascend through the suburb of Harbledown, where the route becomes predominantly traffic-free, tracing the old railway line.

As we continue, the path meanders through Blean Woods, one of the largest areas of ancient broadleaved woodland in southern Britain.

Approaching Whitstable, the landscape opens up to reveal panoramic views of the coast. The trail concludes near Whitstable Harbour, renowned for its oyster trade and vibrant maritime heritage.

Historical Significance:
The Crab and Winkle Way follows the route of the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway, affectionately known as the “Crab and Winkle Line.” Opened in 1830, it was among the first passenger railways in the world and featured the oldest railway tunnel and bridge globally. Engineered by notable figures like George Stephenson and Thomas Telford, the railway was a marvel of its time, utilizing stationary steam engines and early locomotives like the ‘Invicta.’ The line operated until 1952, after which it was repurposed into the current walking and cycling path.
