Mapping the Shakers

Canterbury Shaker Village is currently undertaking a study of the Village’s inhabitants over its 200-year history. We know much about the Village’s leaders, but we wish to know more about all of the 2,300+ individuals who lived, worked, and worshiped in this small southern New Hampshire village.

What may we learn about individual Shakers from mapping vital records?

What sort of community portrait may be drawn once we chart all this information?

We are also mapping the Village’s built environment. How did the Shakers remodel their community to adapt to changing needs and priorities?
