In this presentation with experienced amateur astronomer Jim DellaPenna, we will ask the question: where are all the aliens? Learn about the Fermi Paradox, UFOs, Drake’s Equation, the evolution of life on Earth, and the numerous conditions a planet must meet just to be able to support life (let alone produce it). This program takes place in the Picker Room on Tuesday, November 18, at 6:30 p.m.
We will delve into how difficult it is to estimate how many intelligent civilizations may exist, how they might be detected, and how we might communicate with them. Jim will also share some of the more “sensible” reasons accounting for the great silence from space.

Jim DellaPenna has been an amateur astronomer since he was a teenager, when he performed observations for the American Society of Variable Star Observers in Cambridge. He presently maintains membership in 2 astronomy clubs and served 7 years as an officer of the Raleigh Astronomy Club in North Carolina. Jim also built and maintains a small observatory on his property in South Hope featuring a roll-off roof.
He has participated in numerous public outreach events for the North Carolina Museum of Science, elementary schools, CSD 5 Adult Education, and the general public, including semi-annual public observing events at the Wiscasset, Waterville, and Farmington Railway Museum.
