The Athens Historic Preservation Society is hosting dinner and a concert featuring Aura Shards on Sunday, August 24 at the 1817 Brick Meetinghouse in Athens, VT.
Starting at 5:00 PM, Kamila’s Kitchen will be serving traditional Afghan food for purchase. Kamila has been serving up delicious Afghan food all around the Brattleboro area at pop ups, food truck rallies and farmers markets for over 2 years. Bring chairs or a blanket for a picnic dinner on the lawn with some of Kamila’s tasty dishes and traditional Afghan breads. Also be sure to bring cash or checks. There is no cellular service at the Meetinghouse!
At 6:00 PM Aura Shards, will fill the 1817 Brick Meetinghouse with their world fusion rhythms. Aura Shards is based out of Brattleboro VT, creating new and unique sounds from the Hand Pan (aka Hang Drum), along with a variety of ancient rhythmic and tonal instruments. With all original compositions, Aura Shards weaves a big sound that is at once harmonically and rhythmically complex and engaging, while at the same time soothing, unobtrusive and meditative. The duo consists of Anders Burrows (Hand Pan, Didgeridoo, Djembe) and Jed Blume (Hand Pan, Tabla, Djembe).
The Athens Brick Meetinghouse is on the national register. It is historically significant to the Windham County region of Vermont, and particularly the twelve surrounding towns which comprised the "Old Athens Circuit" - Grafton, Rockingham, Townshend, Londonderry, Weston, Chester, Acton, Springfield, Landgrove, Windham, Putney and Mt. Holly. Circuit preachers from Athens, traveled out to these towns to perform Methodist religious services. Quarterly camp meetings with congregants from these towns often lasted two days at this “Mother Church.”
