We are pleased to welcome two outstanding speakers as we explore the emotional, ethical, and human-centred aspects of prehospital care—especially in situations of trauma, end-of-life, and critical injury.

Our first speaker is Professor Stephen Barclay, who will speak on palliative and end-of-life care
Stephen is a General Practitioner and Honorary Consultant in Palliative Medicine. He is Professor of Palliative Care at the University of Cambridge and Director of Studies in Clinical Medicine at Emmanuel College.
With over 20 years of research experience and more than 200 publications, his work focuses on primary care delivery of end-of-life care, advance care planning, and education in palliative medicine. He co-leads palliative care teaching at the Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine and the Undergraduate Education Forum of the Association for Palliative Medicine, currently overseeing the revision of its national curriculum. He also serves as Clinical Lead for End of Life Care in the Cambridge and Peterborough ICS and formerly co-led the NIHR national collaboration on palliative and end-of-life care.
In this talk, he will explore the role of prehospital and emergency clinicians in recognising when to shift from active intervention to comfort-focused care—and how to do so with compassion and clarity.

Our second speaker is Alice Kershberg, presenting on supporting families through the worst moments
Alice Kershberg is the Lead for Patient and Family Liaison at Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, in her role she and the team supports patients and families following life changing injury or illness. Prior to taking on this role Alice spent around 13 years working at the Royal London Hospital caring for patients following major trauma. This included a rewarding nearly 7 years as a Specialist Nurse for traumatic brain injury, her passion for supporting those with Brain injury extends to her role as a Trustee for Headway East London, an incredible brain injury charity supporting people with brain injury across 13 Boroughs of London. Alice recently completed a Masters in Nursing at City University London with a dissertation focused on the impact of nursing staff at an MTC caring for dying trauma patients.
Her talk will focus on the experience of families during traumatic events, the importance of clear and compassionate communication, and how clinical teams can support those affected through the most difficult moments. Drawing from her clinical work and recent Master’s research, Alice offers a trauma-informed perspective on prehospital care.
