Jivamukti is more than just a physical practice; it's a potent and invigorating method that integrates the spiritual and ethical aspects of yoga into a flowing asana sequence. Rooted in the ancient teachings of yoga, Jivamukti, co-founded by Sharon Gannon and David Life, aims to guide you towards spiritual liberation – hence the name, which translates to "liberation while living."
What to Expect in a Jivamukti Class:
A Jivamukti class will challenge you physically and inspire you intellectually and spiritually. Here's a guide of what you can expect:
Dynamic Asana: Our Jivamukti classes feature vigorous and intelligently sequenced flow of postures. You'll move with your breath, building strength, flexibility, and stamina. Expect a practice that is both grounding and uplifting.
The Five Tenets: Each class is woven around the five tenets of Jivamukti Yoga, providing a framework for your practice:
Ahimsa (Non-violence): This principle extends beyond the mat, encouraging compassion towards all beings, including animals. You might hear reminders about ethical choices and conscious living.
Bhakti (Devotion): Expect the chanting of Sanskrit mantras, often at the beginning and sometimes at the end of class, to cultivate a sense of devotion and connect you to the lineage of yoga.
Nada Yoga (The Yoga of Sound): Music plays an integral role in Jivamukti. You'll practice to a diverse soundtrack, from traditional Indian chants to contemporary music, all carefully selected to enhance the energy and focus of the class.
Dhyana (Meditation): While the asana practice is dynamic, each class will include moments of stillness and guided meditation to cultivate inner awareness and presence.
Shastra (Scripture): Expect insightful teachings drawn from ancient yogic texts and philosophical concepts. Your teacher will weave these teachings into the class, offering food for thought and encouraging self-reflection.
Hands-on Assists: Jivamukti teachers offer safe and skillful hands-on adjustments to deepen your alignment and understanding of the postures (always offered with consent).
Breath Awareness: Throughout the class, you'll be guided to synchronize your breath with your movement, fostering a deeper connection between body and mind.
Jivamukti classes offer a powerful and transformative practice that extends far beyond the physical. You'll leave feeling invigorated, grounded, and perhaps with a new perspective on your life both on and off the mat.
