Join the List Center and the MIT Science Fiction Society (MITSFS) in reading about Octavia Butler’s writing practice. Readings will be sent to registered attendees in advance of the program.
In the List Center’s exhibition , Octavia Butler’s seminal novel Parable of the Sower (1993) serves as a central reference point for Artist’s recent work reflecting on Octavia Butler’s papers at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California.
To elaborate on this exhibition, the List Center has teamed up with the MIT Science Fiction Society to host two reading discussions, as an opportunity to investigate the legacy Octavia Butler has left within the science fiction community and how that is explored in American Artist: To Acorn. In addition to a brief discussion, will be a chance to walk the stacks of the MIT Science Fiction Society Library.
The MIT Science Fiction Society boasts the world’s largest public open-shelf collection of science books. It has been around for over 70 years, making it one of the oldest student organizations at MIT. Anyone is welcome to browse the shelves during the library’s listed hours and members can borrow from their circulating section on the 4th floor of the MIT Student Center in building W20-473. Membership is open to anyone.
Join us again on February 11 at the List Center for another discussion and a tour of American Artist: To Acorn.
