Materials Lab Workshop: Drawing in Shadows—Exploring Light and Form with Jean Sbarra Jones

Join artist Jean Sbarra Jones for a hands-on drawing workshop in which you’ll explore using charcoal to depict dramatic contrasts in light. Participants will work directly from life and begin by drawing a soft gray tone on white paper and then use erasers and various types of charcoal to experiment with the variety, flexibility, and richness of the medium.

This workshop is organized in conjunction with the current exhibition Sketch, Shade, Smudge: Drawing from Gray to Black (September 12, 2025–January 18, 2026).

All materials will be provided.

The hands-on session will take place in the Materials Lab on the Lower Level.

$15 workshop fee. Registration is required and space is limited; registration will open on this form, beginning on Wednesday, October 29, at 10am. Workshop fee must be paid to confirm registration. Minimum age of 14; no previous experience required.
