What happens when the ‘irresistible force’ of filmmaker meets the often ‘immovable object’ of industrial architecture?
Cambridge Industrial Archaeology Group will go out 'on location' to for a virtual exploration of how industrial architecture has adapted' some of cinema's most accomplished directors in order to create: utopias, dystopias, supernatural ‘zones’, camouflaged pasts and enigmatic futures, located in mountainscapes, waterscapes, cityscapes, factoryscapes and travelscapes.
Featuring exclusive:
* recollections contributed by film & television producer Gale Anne Hurd about the challenges of filming 'Aliens' (1986) in Acton Lane power station
* location photography and production documents reproduced courtesy of The Stanley Kubrick Archive, illustrating the afterlife of Beckton manufactured gasworks as it was 'resculpted' as film-set for 'Full Metal Jacket' (1987)
* screening of excerpts from Jean-Luc Godard's first film 'Operation Concrete' (1955) made when Godard was a construction worker at Grande Dixence dam.
Presented by Dr Gordon Davies, volunteer at Cambridge Museum of Technology as a ‘sequel’ to Cambridge Industrial Archaeology Group’s March 2025 and April 2025 meetings about the industrial archaeology of film studios.
