Grimelda
“A damaged idea of music” is how Grimelda describes their wild conglomerate of art-punk, noise rock, hyperpop, nu-metal, and even bossa nova. And there’s a good chance you’ve either seen them at Sled, or somewhere across the country as they tour. Just follow the sound of kazoos, farm animals, and home-schooled math-rock.
Emma Goldman
Named after the revolutionary anarchist, four-piece Emma Goldman plays screamo inspired by Vancouver's political landscape. Their music sways between hardcore breakdowns and upbeat rhythms that will have you dancing like you’re at a ‘90s warehouse rave. With lyrics that experiment with form, they craft live performances with equal parts catastrophe and revolutionary fervour.
tarotfuntime
This is the kind of sonic weirdness that only happens in rural Alberta. tarotfuntime wields noise like a weapon, smashing from absurd grindcore to dance-punk hooks before you’ve had time to process what the hell is happening. Like popped-up nu-metal or thrash as interpreted by Madonna, all bets are off with this clattering three-piece.
Pollux
Made up of three members ranging from 13 to 16 years old, Pollux wields teenaged riffs heavier than you’d believe possible. Their alternative crunch is brought to life by virtuosic musicianship that ranges from precise to daringly improvisational. Stoner rock’s future belongs to the kids, and the future is looking bright.
