An in-depth class covering how to grow and run a small to medium-sized CA native plant nursery in a backyard or small area

About this Event

*****All classes will meet at the Malibu Creek State Park Admin Building (1925 Las Virgenes Road). Classes will begin sharply at 7:30am and after signing in, the class may move away from the '1925 Las Virgenes Road' address. It is quite possible that folks arriving after 7:30am will not be able to find the class. ********

This event is 1 of 6 workshops offered thru SAMO Fund and the Malibu Creek Docents. Full list of dates is October 1st, October 8th, October 15th, October 22nd, November 5th and November 12th Folks can attend one class, all 6 classes, or however many they wish to attend.

This morning event will take place outdoors at Malibu Creek State Park. Some of the classes will take place under shade, but attendees should be prepared to stand all 2 hours and be exposed to the sun for various lengths of time. Please wear hiking or outdoor working attire, bring water/reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and a sun hat.

Join us for an info-packed workshop detailing how a native plant nursery works with California native seed, cuttings and live plants on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Depending on plant availability and class size, plants to be worked on and discussed include California Buckwheat, Toyon, Black Sage, California Sagebrush and various rhizomatous perennials and bunch grasses. Specific topics to be covered include:

- How to identify and sustainably collect native seed

- Applying various treatments to seed for best germination results

- Soils, fertilizers, and techniques used when transplanting seedlings and older plants

- Producing small and large amounts of native plants in various size pots

- Producing plants thru cuttings and divisions
