Rethinking Mā’lūf through the Tunisian ʻŪd ʻArbī at the Cairo Congress of 1932
This seminar focuses on how Tunisian mā’lūf has become part of processes of power and national authority since French protectorate (1881). It examines various cultural and identity interrelations of one of its most iconic musical instruments, the Tunisian ʻūd ʻarbī, focusing particular on examples now held in Tunisia (CMAM and private collections in Tunisia), and in European museums (HM&G in London, MIM in Brussels). I consider questions of local influences and transmission, and while reviewing the role of the instrument during the Cairo Congress 1932 recording, I suggest how we can rethink a history of 20th century mā’lūf in Tunisia.
