Join us for our August Public Lecture Series at the Cairns Historical Society.
First up, Janine Evans presents Lantana: a weeds guide to empire, based on her Honours research into how weeds became an inevitable outcome of colonial clearing for agriculture, overgrazing, and overuse of fire for pastoralism. Discover how plants like lantana were first planted as ornamentals, only to escape into the environment and cause havoc.
Following this, local historian Dr Jan Wegner asks What plants did the Chinese introduce to the north? and explores the real story behind new food plants introduced by Chinese settlers, separating fact from fiction on W**d introductions.
Enjoy both talks and then relax with afternoon tea on the veranda among friends.
