Spasticity - The red herring of the Neuro world

This presentation will examine 'spasticity'; what it is, why it develops, how it can vary depending on the injury, and the challenges of assessment and treatment in the clinical setting. We will explore the way neurological impairments can interact to result in 'spasticity symptoms' and why these symptoms, although indicative of dysfunction, are often not the primary underlying cause of movement disorder in our patients. We will also consider how therapists, with their unique knowledge of movement, play an important role in avoiding the 'spasticity' red herring, ensuring comprehensive management of movement dysfunction in preference to treatment of spasticity symptoms in isolation.
