Fashion show: Make do and mend with Notty Hornblower

Join Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust in the Pump Room on Saturday 17th May for a fashion show celebrating the styles of the 1940s!

Hope House Costume Museum presents ‘Make do and mend’ in the historic listed Buxton Pump Room.

Curator and owner Notty Hornblower from Hope House Costume Museum and her models will showcase a stunning selection of garments from her extensive collection of 3000 pieces.

This special evening will highlight the iconic fashion of the 1940s, an era defined by creativity and resilience. From the practical yet stylish make-do-and-mend outfits necessitated by wartime rationing to the tailored suits and sophisticated eveningwear that emerged as fashion embraced elegance once more, this show will immerse you in the trends that defined the decade.

The show will explore the influence of utility clothing, with its clever cuts and minimal fabric use, alongside the bold prints, padded shoulders, and structured silhouettes that defined wartime fashion. As the evening progresses, you will witness how post-war designs evolved, paving the way for the new look which was created by Christian Dior in 1947

With a fitting 1940s soundtrack and Notty’s insightful commentary, this event promises an unforgettable evening of fashion history.

Enjoy pre-drinks in the Pump Room between 6.30-7.00pm before the show starts at 7.00pm in Pump Room.
