We’re holding auditions for our Autumn production of the hilariously silly comedy Bleak Expectations on Monday 23 and Wednesday 25 June 7pm at the United Reformed Church, Hardwick Square, Buxton.
The roles on offer (including multi-casting) are:
Pip Bin (our hero, a virtuous young man trying to make his way in the world)
Sir Philip Bin (Pip as an older man, the curmudgeonly narrator of the story)
Mr Gently Benevolent (Pip’s evil guardian, also variously disguised as a Vicar and as Harlan J Trashcan, an unconvincing American businessman)
Pippa Bin (Pip’s sister, as noble as he is, and very skilled at blacksmithing)
Harry Biscuit (Pip’s best friend, always coming up with hare-brained schemes)/ also playing Mr Skinflint Parsimonious (ironically, the most generous of men)
Wackwell Hardthrasher/ Praygood Hardthrasher/ Chastity Hardthrasher/ Solomon Hardthrasher (four villainous siblings: a sadistic headmaster, a hypocritical vicar, a domineering aunt and a corrupt judge)
Agnes Bin (Pip’s mother, driven mad by grief)/ Flora Dies-Early (Pip’s sweetheart, not the healthiest)
Poppy Bin (Pip’s younger sister)/ Ripely Fecund (a lovely young woman forced to wear a bag on her head)
Thomas Bin (Pip’s doomed father)/ Bakewell Havertwitch (an escaped convict)/ Broadly Fecund (a man with many, many children)
There’s also various schoolboys, urchins etc, who will be played by the whole cast.
We deliberately haven’t included ages or genders in these descriptions, as we want to keep our options open as to who we might cast. What we’re looking for is energy, inventiveness, an ability to play different characters in a heightened, melodramatic style, and a willingness to be playful and have fun! At the auditions, we intend to try people out in various different roles and different combinations, to see who work best together, so be prepared for a playful evening!
Bleak Expectations runs from Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 November at the Pavilion Arts Centre.
