Finding Work? In THIS Economy?!

Open to all FASS students!

In today’s job market, it can feel like you’re stuck in a loop—applications go out, rejections come in, and you’re left wondering if a degree is enough.

This workshop is here to break that cycle. You’ll learn how to start building meaningful experience while you’re still in school (or just after), where to actually find those opportunities, and how to turn them into skills that employers notice.

Even those part-time or “survival jobs” you may already have can be more relevant than you think—we’ll help you connect the dots. You’ll also hear from a student who’s been through it and walk away with a personalized plan of action you can use right away.

What we’ll cover:

• How to break the cycle – Why the “need experience to get experience” trap exists, and how to flip it.
• Where to look for opportunities – Practical ways to grow experience: campus jobs, volunteer roles, side hustles, survival jobs (yep, they count), and creative projects.
• Student story, unfiltered – Hear how one student turned “just a job” into a launchpad for bigger opportunities.
• Build your action plan – Leave with a step-by-step roadmap for how you can start building and showcasing your experience now.

Location(s):

Session will be hosted in person and via zoom. For in person participants location is at Arts Central (AQ 3020). For zoom participants we will send link 24 hours prior to workshop.

Schedule:

• 4:00 to 4:30pm - Mingling and check-in
• 4:30 to 5:30pm - Workshop with Albert Fung, Career Education Manager at SFU Career & Volunteer Services
• 5:30 to 6:00pm - Optional Q&A time
