Join us for an evening with the featured guest speaker, Andrew Sam, Task Force Leader of the Alamance Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST), North Carolina.
Andrew Sam is Andrew Sam is a retired critical care nurse who cared for critically ill patients in the Medicine ICU at UNC Hospitals for 30 years. He was honored for his excellence in practice and commitment to the nursing profession by being named one of the Great 100 in NC. Andrew took a 6-month break from nursing in 1992 to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. After his epic hike, he began his trail volunteer work, first with the Piedmont Appalachian Trail Hikers Association and then, since 2016, with the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Andrew became the FMST Alamance County Task Force Leader in 2021, organizing and overseeing the volunteers who built and maintain 40+ miles of the MST. In addition, Andrew partners with Alamance Parks, Burlington, Elon, and other local communities, building and maintaining trails. He has dedicated countless hours to this endeavor, building up a large group of volunteers who gather to work every 3rd Saturday and every Monday. In 2023, Andrew was awarded the prestigious Piedmont Legacy Trails Award by the Piedmont Land Conservancy for outstanding commitment to creating trails in the Piedmont Triad.
In this program, Andrew will provide details on trails in Alamance County, including the MST/Haw River Trail and the Cane Creek Mountains Natural Area Trails. Trail projects and volunteer work will be highlighted, including new trails currently being built.
Guests will have the opportunity to engage with representatives from local recreation and parks departments to discover park, trail, and lake destinations, as well as learn about outdoor programs available in the community. Enjoy coffee, light refreshments, and meaningful conversations. Whether you're an educator, community leader, parent, or nature enthusiast, this is an event you won't want to miss!
