💫 ARTIST DETAILS
"Local Legend" John Malcolm has been performing in Brisbane for decades, and apart from his festival and international Expo appearances, is particularly associated with his long stint at The Bombshelter (Story Bridge Hotel) in the 80‘s and 90‘s, overlapping with a record-breaking residency at The Embassy Hotel in central Brisbane.
Never using a pick, his guitar style is a unique fusion of Gypsy, Classical and Blues Finger-picking.
His original songs are mainly poetic lyrics over fingerstyle guitar and foot stomps. There are no set arrangements.
When the mood is right he likes to venture into dazzling guitar improvisations and explore the freedom that solo performance allows.
John realised his vocation literally around the campfire in his early teens; his family would take summer holidays at Torquay, Victoria in the days before portable televisions.
He was captivated by the atmosphere created by talented musicians and the hearty participation in choruses etc.
He brought his largely folk music repertoire and adapted to the demands of the thriving pre-pokies Brisbane pub music without becoming just one more cover act, holding two very popular central residencies for over a decade.
