It’s time for our first Hoops and Hangout of the new school year! The info below is how things normally operate but assuming open gym hours are happening this weekend (I’ll call to confirm), let’s plan to utilize the main gym for now while it’s so hot out! There’s a nominal entry fee…maybe $2? Excited to get back at it!
If your kid(s) love basketball—AWESOME! If they don’t—AWESOME!
This is a casual, come-and-go event with plenty of ways for kids to have fun. Here’s how it works:
Where Kids Might Be
• Basketball Courts – You will find kids playing basketball, and you might find them hanging out in the sand at the adjacent volleyball court, chatting, or hanging out in the shade behind the utility building.
• Baseball fields - running bases, playing whiffle ball, kickball, whatever.
• Playground Area – Others will be on the playground (the larger one behind the community center and/or the one near the baseball fields), running in the open field, playing in the volleyball court sand, relaxing under a pavilion, or roaming with parents over to the pond.
• All Around – Some kids may move between areas, ride scooters along the walkways, play with RC cars, draw with sidewalk chalk, etc. It’s very loosey-goosey!
For Those Who Want to Play Basketball
Scrimmage Games
• The far side of the double court will be designated for scrimmage games.
• Instead of full-length games, we’ll have multiple shorter scrimmages.
• Kids can join or leave at the START of each new scrimmage, so no one has to wait too long or feel stuck in a game.
• Once a scrimmage begins, players are asked to stay until it ends. Non-scrimmaging kids should remain on the other side of the court.
Free Play
• The side of the court closer to the parking lot will remain open for free play once scrimmages start—shooting hoops, one-on-one games, etc.
• Kids can switch between free play and scrimmages at the start of each new scrimmage game.
Age Ranges
There’s no strict age requirement for scrimmaging, but older teens and experienced players will be participating. As a general guideline, 11+ might be a good fit, but parents can use their discretion.
Bottom Line
This is a relaxed, flexible gathering! We just ask that:
✔️ The far side of the court be set aside for scrimmaging once they begin.
✔️ Kids join or exit scrimmages only between games.
✔️ Everyone plays fairly and respects one another (including any adults facilitating).
Let’s have fun!
