FILMLEÍRÁS
A 16 mm-es filmfelvételek, a hosszú beállítások és a finoman megkomponált képek lassan barangolják be a várost, miközben a rendező hangján anyja levelei kelnek életre. A sorok a mindennapok apró rezdüléseit idézik: betegségeket, háztartási szokásokat, eljegyzéseket és anyagi gondokat. Az írások szelíd melankóliája feszültségbe kerül Akerman szinte monoton előadásmódjával és Manhattan látványával, amely idegen, kísérteties szellemvárosként tárul fel, üres utcáival és visszhangtalan tágasságával.

Retrospektív: Félúton otthon
A 2025-ös BIFF retrospektív programja az „otthon” fogalmának sokrétű jelentését tárja fel a filmtörténet egyes, a válogatók által szubjektíven kijelölt pontjain – így rákapcsolódva a menedék és a száműzetés, illetve a nosztalgia és a nyugtalanság kettősségének témáira. A vetített filmek az emlékezés, a migráció és a hazatérés sokszínű perspektívájából vizsgálják, mit jelent egy helyhez vagy egy eszméhez tartozni, kötődni. Megidézik a távozás magányát és a visszatérés gyakran illuzórikus reményét, miközben felvetik a kérdést: vajon az otthon egy földrajzi pont, egy érzés, vagy csupán egy emlékezetünkben élő, örökké változó állapot?
A RENDEZŐRŐL
Chantal Akerman (1950–2015) Brüsszelben született. Tizenöt évesen Godard Bolond Pierrot című filmje indította a pályára, első rövidfilmje, a Saute ma ville (1968) már radikális hangot ütött meg. A hetvenes évek elején New Yorkban formálták látásmódját Jonas Mekas és Michael Snow kísérleti filmjei. Hazatérve elkészítette a Jeanne Dielman, 1080 Brüsszel, Kereskedő utca 23. (1975) című művét, amely a 70-es években feltámadó feminista filmes irányzatok alapköve, és amelyet 2022-ben a Sight & Sound minden idők legjobb filmjének választott a kritikusok szavazatai által.
Több mint ötven filmje, valamint installációi és írásai az identitás, az emlékezet és a női tapasztalat kérdéseit vizsgálják. Hatása rendezők egész sorára kiterjed, Gus Van Santtól Céline Sciammáig.

DESCRIPTION
Her 16mm footage, long takes and elegantly composed shots roaming the city, set to the filmmaker's voice-over as she reads letters from her mother. The text paints an intimate picture of family life, with its catalogue of minor illnesses, domestic routines, betrothals and financial anxieties. The elegiac emotionalism of the writings counterpoints the flat monotone of Akerman’s recitation but also the images of Manhattan as an alien, urban ghost-town, its streets preternaturally empty.

This programme delves into the profound emotions tied to "home"— a place of comfort yet often shadowed by fear and alienation. Through stories of migration, memory, and longing, the films explore the duality of home as both a sanctuary and a source of unease. They speak to the loneliness of those who leave and the complex realities of returning, asking: Can we ever truly go home again, or is 'home' an ever-changing concept within ourselves?
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Chantal Akerman was born in Brussels on 6 June 1950. At 15, she discovered Godard’s Pierrot le Fou, inspiring her to pursue filmmaking. She briefly attended the Brussels film school (INSAS) in 1967, leaving to make her first short film, Saute ma ville (1968), a radical expression of cinema. In the early 1970s, she moved to New York, influenced by the experimental films of Jonas Mekas and Michael Snow (La Chambre, Hotel Monterey).
Back in Belgium, she directed Je tu il elle and then Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975), a landmark of feminist cinema, presented at Cannes Directors Fortnight and named the best film of all time by Sight & Sound in 2022. Akerman freely explored genres – fiction, documentary, musical comedy, literary adaptation – over a career spanning fifty films.
She also created video installations from 1995 and authored several books. Akerman passed away in 2015, but her work continues to influence filmmakers worldwide, including Gus Van Sant, Tsai Ming-Liang, Kelly Reichardt, and Céline Sciamma.
