Artist-in-Residence Exhibition: Unstable Histories
Unstable Histories presents a new body of work by Tristan Perrotti, created during his residency at Etaj and in partnership with After/time Collective. These paintings imagine history, folklore, and popular culture as overlapping timelines that refuse to remain separate. Revolutions, myths, and everyday rituals coexist in the same frame, exposing the way memory and imagination shape our understanding of the present.
Rather than treating history as linear or resolved, these works suggest it is cyclical, performed again and again through play, through violence, through images both sacred and absurd. The paintings become a stage where ghosts of the past meet the fictions of today. Leaving open the question of what is real, what is remembered, and what is to come.
Tristan Perrotti grew up in rural southern Oregon and is now based in Portland, working primarily in expressionist portraiture and figurative painting. His practice blends immediacy, tension, and critique of contemporary masculinity culture, while drawing from both classical and surreal influences. He has exhibited work in Portland, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, and San Francisco. All while continuing to explore new directions in form, narrative, and emotional resonance.
