“Mapping Contact Zones” Talk invites Roma intellectuals, cultural professionals, and activists to reflect on their own “contact zones” — spaces where community life, cultural expression, and social transformation intersect.
The talk is hosted by Goethe-Institut Bucharest in the frame of the Training for the Contact Zone Erasmus+ project - a European initiative dedicated to rethinking adult education through cultural participation and heritage-based learning.
A Contact Zone is any physical, social, or symbolic space where people with different experiences, identities, and worldviews come together.
Such encounters can be difficult, but they open the door to mutual understanding, shared agency, and collective sense-making/ meaning-making.
Through lived experience and practice, Joachim Umlauf moderator of the discussion will explore together with guest speaker Elena Radu and Delia Grigore how Roma professionals are creating spaces for dialogue and creativity within their communities, and how community knowledge can be recognized, valued, and embedded within institutional frameworks.
Invited speakers:
Prof. Dr. Elena Radu, activist and community leader, national and international trainer in the field of school mediation, bullying prevention, and assertive communication.
Prof.Dr. Delia Grigore, professor at the University of Bucharest, writer, researcher, and cultural activist.
The discussion will be moderated by Joachim Umlauf, former director of the Goethe-Institut Bucharest.
This session is part of the public programme accompanying the “Contact Zones in Practice” conference, within the Training for the Contact Zone project.
