Glacial Lake Madron was the first of five glacial lakes in the Berrien County Kalamazoo and Valparaiso morainic systems which originally drained through a spillway over older deposits in northern Indiana. Leader Pat Fisher, President of HCH, will share some of the local glacial history and point out several physical features that are direct results of our latest glacial event. This is the first time the Harbor Country Hikers have hiked the Myron Perman Nature Preserve. Come and join us as this is just an awesome place to visit!
This 45-acre property includes farm fields, wetlands, and hiking trails through a sprawling beech-maple forest. Other notable features include an abundance of spring wildflowers, an on-site cabin (no public entry), and impressive plant biodiversity. Hiking trails loop through the forested segment of the property. To access them, walk up the old farm lane off the parking lot.
HCH has an All-Terrain Rollator which may be reserved for use on our hikes. Reservations are made on a first-come first-served basis by filling out the brief form at
https://harborcountryhikers.org/rollator.
Wear long pants (preferably tucked-in), a sun hat, sturdy shoes or boots, preferred pest controls, and bring plenty of water. Light precipitation and hot or cold weather don’t ordinarily lead us to call off hikes, but health-threatening temperature extremes and lightning can be causes for cancellation. In case of inclement weather, the day of the hike, check our website, harborcountryhikers.org, or our Facebook page for notice of cancellation or rescheduling.
