Ravel had been playing with the idea of a tribute to the Viennese waltz for twenty years. But Johann Strauss’ carefree Vienna was hardly recognisable after the First World War. So it may come as no surprise that La Valse disintegrates into an outpouring of ignorance that poses the question: “What now?” The Canadian Barbara Assiginaak’s 2021 composition also undergoes a transformation. Eko-Bmijwang follows the current of a river, hastened and slowed down by Mother Nature. Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2 with the pianist Alexandre Kantorow and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 complete the programme. Tchaikovsky himself gave it the nickname ‘The Passionate Symphony’, although this was later translated, confusingly, as ‘Pathétique’. Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s conducting style is nothing if not passionate, as the Montreal Metropolitan will reveal.

L'idée d’un hommage à la valse viennoise tournait dans la tête de Ravel depuis 20 ans. Mais la Vienne insouciante de Johann Strauss n’était plus guère reconnaissable après la Première Guerre mondiale. La Valse déraille donc en une expression d'ignorance libératrice et pose un point d'interrogation à la question : « Et maintenant ? ». La Canadienne Barbara Assiginaak soumet également sa composition de 2021 à toute une évolution : Eko-Bmijwang suit le cours d'une rivière, accélérée et ralentie par Mère Nature. Le Deuxième Concerto pour piano de Saint-Saëns, avec le pianiste Alexandre Kantorow, et la Sixième Symphonie de Tchaïkovski complètent le programme. Tchaïkovski lui-même la surnommait « La Passionnée », bien qu'elle ait été ensuite confusément traduite par « Pathétique ». Le chef Yannick Nézet-Séguin met son style de direction profondément passionné au service du Metropolitan de Montréal, pour le plus grand bonheur de nos oreilles.

De idee om de Weense wals te huldigen cirkelde al twintig jaar in het hoofd van Ravel. Maar het zorgeloze Wenen van Johann Strauss is nauwelijks herkenbaar na de Eerste Wereldoorlog. La Valse ontspoort dan ook tot een ontladende expressie van onwetendheid en zet het vraagteken na de vraag: “Wat nu?”. De Canadese Barbara Assiginaak laat haar compositie uit 2021 ook van gedaante veranderen. Eko-Bmijwang volgt de stroom van een rivier, versneld en vertraagt door Moeder Natuur. Saint-Saëns’ Tweede Pianoconcerto met pianist Alexandre Kantorow en Tsjaikovski’s Zesde Symfonie vervolledigen het programma. Tsjaikovski gaf er zelf de bijnaam ‘De passionele’ aan, al werd dit later verwarrend vertaald als ‘Pathétique’. De dirigeerstijl van Yannick Nézet-Séguin is op zijn minst passioneel te noemen. Zo getuigt de Montreal Metropolitan.
