1929 is a Brussels-based duo consisting of award-winning composer/guitarist Manuel Roland and Danish-born vocalist Sisse Bro. Their music begins with gentle, voice-centered songs, brought to life by Sisse's crystalline and soft vocals. Blending elements of folk, modern pop, and sophisticated composition, their sound explores melodic complexity within a classic songwriting structure.
Lyrically, their songs explore contrasts—light and darkness, inner turmoil, and late-night introspection—crafted through poetic puzzles of phrases. Their name is inspired by the provocative 1929 surrealist book published in Brussels by Aragon, Péret, and Man Ray, reflecting the band’s embrace of artistic freedom and rule-breaking.
