About the event

Concert Dark Mattr / Finissage Reversing Gaze

Reversing Gaze: Matthieu Marre & Razvan Neagoe
Both photographers in this exhibition are concerned by things that are invisible, the secret layers of reality, that speak not to the eye but to an inner sense yet to be discovered. The “optical unconscious” as Walter Benjamin would say. Their photographs are from the same stuff that dreams and memories are made of.
Matthieu Marre (FR, Bruxelles)
I photograph for love. For what remains and what I don't understand. I use photography for the mystique it conceals, that of the black box that collides with the evidence of the ceaseless flow of consciousness. The black box as a doorway to the subconscious and a possible expression of the magic of existence. Games of the eye and the unconscious, of desire and death, of emotion slipping away, of time passing, of identity being invented. I'm digging a furrow at the end of which I hope for some form of decantation. In the end, all that will remain are clichés and the love that emanates from them. Only and yet. In this sense, the approach is always the same. The pursuit of Roland Barthes' words, formulated in the course of an interview: “Each of us speaks a single sentence that only death can interrupt”. I speak of the mystical and the subconscious, that is to say, I imagine the photographic act as capable of revealing something potentially felt, but inarticulate, on the frontiers of language. but inarticulate, at the frontiers of language, the image of the link between self and other. And what are we if not beings of links? I photograph in the urgency of desire desire, in a need for collusion, in a need to anchor. And that's why I've gradually focused on the people I love, the landscapes, objects and interiors whose gaze I feel on me, because it's through them that a resonance can be established with sincerity and depth, with meaning, by minimizing pretense, preconceived ideas and obvious bullshit. Because I know part of what lies behind these characters and settings. À through shared love (just about shared, let's be cautious) the mystery of things may have some chance of vibrating.
Răzvan Neagoe (RO, Bucharest)
The works chosen for the exhibition reflect exposures, techniques and subjects characteristic of my artistic journey in recent years. The themes proposed for contemplation represent a territory to be continuously researched on the interior or exterior space. The image I propose is a result of fragmented visual information, which tells about the successive changes that I have memorized in a specific period or of some visual fragments part of a moment or an instant. As I have already stated, I like to “paint” in the darkroom. In addition to themes and subjects, the exploration in the dark as part of photography is brought to a territory inclined towards meditation and experiment. The Landscape-portrait, the Self-portrait-Portrait, the Chair-portrait, can be interpreted as an expression of the image rather than the image itself. The selection of the exhibited works continues my technical approach of working with defective cameras, with expired film and expired paper, and in the case of tintype with expired solutions. The interpretation of the landscape and the transformation of that frame represent the successive or alternative passage from one state to another, from one aspect to another. The chair becomes a sensory reflection of an object in our mind in the form of sensations and perceptions. And the self-portrait-portrait becomes a plastic representation of the appearance of a being. The color or black and white image can be interpreted as a brutal or rudimentary form of the encounter between the contemporary and the traditional image.

The exhibition is open until 1st of June.
